Almost one year too late, I discovered the Tumblr page called All Art No Pay that documents examples of actual Craigslist ads asking artists to work for free. Often, the people who place the ads make it seem as if they are doing you a favor because for all of your hard work you will be rewarded in exposure, and sometimes even food or beer. If you are lucky, you will be awarded in adventure. Even though the last post is dated 9/29/14, it’s still a great site with plenty of unfortunate examples of this “All Art No Pay” world that we live in. Their tag line makes the problem very clear, “All art and no pay makes it impossible to earn a living as a creative professional.” I encourage you to check it out.
Here is a screenshot of the last. I do love the honest rendition of Lena Dunham and calling her out on not paying artists.
Have you ever worked for free as a creative professional? Share your story with us. We are seeking written or video submissions for our Artist Stories online library, a social justice project, and would love to hear from you.
